Writing is a result of creative thinking. Compelling writing is the genius of a brain that has free thoughts and words flowing in the brain and the brain have the ability to convert these words into such a compelling form of writing that it grips the attention of the reader and makes the reader get completely involved in the writing.

Writing is a skill that that can be developed overtime. But writing competency is something that is a basic requirement. Even the novice writer should be aware of these basics and use them promptly and effectively in his writing. Few tips that are essentially important for basic writing competency are stated below:

1-        Avoid entering two letter spaces between the sentences. This makes the representation of the text really bad and impacts the readability.

2-       Ensure the correct length of the paragraph. The entire text should not be written in a single paragraph form. It should be broken down into consecutive paragraphs that are neither too long nor too short.

3-       The font size and style should be monotonous in the entire text, except for highlighting some quotes or anything important. Otherwise, there should be a similar font size and style as it enhances the readability.

4-      Avoid unnecessary capitalization of words. Use capital alphabet and word only where necessary.

5-       Be sure to apply numbers correctly. Whatever form of word representation you use, use it correctly either it is numeric or roman.

6-      Correct usage of punctuation marks is very important. Unnecessary commas, full stops and other forms of punctuation should be avoided. Similarly, don’t omit to use these punctuation marks where necessary otherwise it makes the tone of the text monotonous which lacks readability and comprehension.

7-       Avoid the unnecessary use of quotation marks in the text.

8-      Avoid using excessive idioms in the text. This may mislead the reader and make it difficult for him to understand the meaning.

9-      Also avoid using clichés and excessive jargons in the text. This misleads the reader.

10-    Also check for spellings errors in the text. There should be no spelling error; this just gives a very bad impression to the reader.

11-     The spacing, indentation and word structure should be correct.

These are just few basic essential that highlight the basic writing competency of the writer. Even if a writer has written a well versed document with compelling writing skills, if it lacks these basic criteria then the reader rejects it and considers it a poor document without giving much regard to the writer’s writing ability.
